Energy Storage Electric Vehicle Revolution: Strong Demand

May 21, 2025 – The energy storage electric vehicle sector is witnessing a robust transformation. In 2023, Fidra Energy acquired a 55-acre site in North England, which is set to be transformed into a 14.5 GWh energy storage facility. Once operational, this facility is expected to become the largest in Europe.

“We are currently optimizing our development projects,” said Chris Elder, CEO of Fidra Energy. However, the project will utilize lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which have shown significant performance improvements and a reduction in costs over the past 18 months.

By 2026, the Thorpe Marsh project is slated to begin operations, featuring a robust energy storage system.

LFP batteries are currently at the forefront of energy storage projects, and their demand has already surpassed that of electric vehicles. According to UBS estimates, by the end of this decade, energy storage capacity needs to increase from 8 times to 34 times by 2050 to keep pace with the growing renewable energy supply.

Rho Motion’s projections indicate that while electric vehicle battery demand remains high, by 2030, energy storage will capture approximately 20% of the market.

Analysts suggest that the U.S. will soon become the second largest storage market, following China, facing challenges related to capacity constraints while long-term demand continues to rise.

This is a positive signal for renewable energy companies, indicating that as countries pivot towards energy storage, a balance in electricity supply needs to be maintained to avoid disruptions.

LFP batteries are generally known for their safety, lower costs, and not being prone to thermal runaway that other battery types might experience. This safety profile is critical for energy storage applications.

According to Morrow Batteries’ Lars Christian Bacher, the push for high-performance carbon strength in production is creating a critical issue in energy storage applications.

“The market for batteries needs to adjust to the growing demand, and the current supply chain constraints are becoming increasingly significant,” he stated.

As production ramps up, the strategy aims to produce 300,000 battery units annually, ensuring that the output meets the growing household demand.

Currently, battery manufacturers are in a race to meet the escalating demand.

LG Energy Solution is ramping up production to fulfill the increasing needs of the electric vehicle market.

A spokesperson for a major automaker highlighted that this shift will focus on the production of LFP batteries.

Despite the U.S. aiming for energy independence, it still relies heavily on China for battery supplies, with 90% of the energy storage batteries sourced from there.

Analysts point out that while the U.S. is currently facing a shortage, the upcoming production ramp-up is expected to ease some of these constraints.

“If the U.S. government indeed aims to attain energy independence, cooperation with China is essential,” he concluded.
