Professor Gao Feng Receives ASME Lifetime Achievement Award in Mechanical Design

Professor

Recently, Professor Gao Feng was awarded the 2026 ASME Machine Design Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). This prestigious accolade recognizes his groundbreaking contributions in creating the General Function Set (GF Set) configuration theory for parallel robots, and in developing function and performance-driven design methodologies for robotic mechanisms. His innovative work has significantly impacted the dynamics performance assessment of aerospace and nuclear power equipment, as well as the invention of large heavy-load forging and intelligent six-legged robots.

Professor Gao, who is affiliated with the Institute of Major Equipment Design and Control Engineering, has dedicated his career to researching parallel mechanism design theory and application technology. He has led several significant national projects, including the National “973 Program” as Chief Scientist, the National 863 Program, and key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, four First Prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels, the ASME Da Vinci Award, and the He Liang He Li Foundation Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

Additionally, he served as the Director of the National Key Laboratory of Mechanical Systems and Vibration and has held various roles, including committee member of the ASME Mechanisms and Robotics Committee and editorial positions for international journals such as Robotica and Engineering. His research on the “six-legged robot” has been featured in prominent venues, including the Beijing Winter Olympics and CCTV-1’s prime time programming, with a model now part of the collection at the History Exhibition Hall of the Communist Party of China.

Established in 1958, the ASME Machine Design Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by the ASME Design Engineering Division to honor individuals or organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the field of mechanical design. It represents the highest recognition given by ASME in the domain of machine design.
