Humanoid Robots Begin Luggage Handling Trials at Tokyo Haneda Airport to Address Labor Shortages

Humanoid robots are set to take on the task of luggage handling at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, marking a significant pilot program in Japan. According to reports, a collaboration between a Japanese airline and the GMO Internet Group will commence next month, focusing on testing humanoid robots in ground handling operations. This trial is expected to last until 2028, aiming to assess the feasibility and efficiency of robots in tasks such as luggage transport.

Involved in the project are a subsidiary of the Japanese airline responsible for ground operations and a company under GMO that promotes applications of artificial intelligence and robotics. This initiative represents Japan’s first experiment of its kind at an airport.

The growing demand for inbound tourism, coupled with an aging population, has exacerbated the issue of labor shortages in ground handling. Despite the apparent automation at airports, many behind-the-scenes tasks still rely heavily on human labor, including cargo loading and directing aircraft. The head of the airline’s ground services indicated that the introduction of robots is expected to alleviate some of the physical labor demands on employees, although critical safety management will still require human oversight.

The GMO team also emphasized that while robots will play a crucial role in addressing labor shortages, they will not completely replace human workers. The upcoming tests will utilize humanoid robots manufactured in China, which can operate continuously for about two to three hours at a time. Looking ahead, both parties plan to expand the application of these robots to additional areas, such as cabin cleaning.
