Hithium Launches 1175Ah Li-ion Cell for Long-Duration Energy Storage
Energy storage-focused lithium-ion manufacturer Hithium has commenced mass production of the world’s first 1,000Ah+ battery cell, aimed specifically at long-duration energy storage (LDES) applications. The company, based in Chongqing, China, announced the production of its “Cell 1175Ah” earlier this week on June 11.
The 1175Ah capacity represents a significant advancement compared to the commonly used 314Ah cells in battery energy storage systems (BESS). It is nearly double the capacity of the recently introduced higher form factor cells around 600Ah, which several BESS providers have begun to adopt. Hithium’s developments in this cell include breakthroughs in wide-width thick coating precision, large-electrode stacking efficiency, innovative cell structure design, enhanced back-end manufacturing efficiency, and improved consistency in cell wrapping.
In the same announcement, Hithium revealed that it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Israel-based engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm El Mor for a long-duration energy storage project in Romania. Romania is actively promoting the deployment of energy storage resources with funding from the EU, recently granting capital expenditure support for approximately 2.5GWh of projects.
Hithium believes its 1175Ah cell is set to establish a new benchmark in the energy storage industry as it transitions into a new era of LDES. The firm also introduced a new 6.25MWh BESS product utilizing the 1175Ah cells at the ees Europe trade show and conference in Munich, Germany, last month. Additionally, at the beginning of June, Hithium announced that it had started producing battery modules and BESS units at a facility located in Texas, USA.
