Future of PHEV Technology: Insights from Long Range Automotive Innovations

Future

What do you think about plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)? Long-term development and transformation: The shift to advanced technologies will lead to a predominance of PHEVs.

On May 9, 2025, at 16:34, in a discussion on the New Energy Economy App, CEO of Linghang Motors expressed that China’s focus on PHEVs will transition to advanced technologies in the next couple of years, with this judgment expected to be verified by 2025. Linghang also highlighted that both the Linghang and the Long-range brands will shift towards advanced technological pathways.

However, with the rapid pace of development, the performance of existing systems may lag behind Linghang’s predictions. Recently, Linghang’s spokesperson stated, “Linghang vehicles are not designed to lead the advanced technology pathway,” a statement that, although not entirely representative of their intentions, indicates they are not committed to advancing such technologies at this time. Data from the national statistics show that by 2024, the combined sales of hybrid vehicles have reached 7.252 million units, a 66% increase compared to the previous year, with pure electric vehicles trailing behind.

Among the hybrid vehicles, PHEVs accounted for 71%, range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) for 16%, and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) for 13%. This implies that the national market for hybrid vehicles has already established a leading share for PHEVs, followed by REEVs and HEVs. Linghang has been actively promoting its advanced technology in the market; however, the share of PHEVs remains relatively low, despite the growing interest.

With the competitive landscape, manufacturers like DM-i and DM-p from other brands are gaining traction, and Linghang’s models are often chosen by consumers. However, it’s essential to note that the technology employed in PHEVs may not be as sophisticated as that of the pure electric models currently on the market.

As a result of continued advancements and consumer demand, the market for PHEVs is expected to grow. It is evident that Linghang and other manufacturers are investing in improving the technology and reducing costs to make PHEVs more appealing to consumers.

Looking ahead, Linghang believes that advanced DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission) systems will sufficiently meet consumer demands across various scenarios. This is why they are prioritizing PHEVs. However, it should be noted that hybrid electric vehicles are still largely dependent on their own systems and configurations.

In summary, Linghang is focusing on a strategy that combines both hybrid and advanced technology pathways. They are committed to making their PHEVs competitive while addressing the challenges presented by rapidly changing market conditions. It remains to be seen how this will unfold in the next few years as the energy transition continues to evolve.
