Professor Gao Feng from Shanghai Jiao Tong University Receives ASME Lifetime Achievement Award in Mechanical Design

Professor

Professor Gao Feng from the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been awarded the ASME Machine Design Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2026. This prestigious recognition is conferred by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to honor individuals or organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the field of mechanical design.

Professor Gao received this award for his pioneering work in developing the General Functional Set (GF Set) configuration theory for parallel robots, as well as his innovative design methodology for robot mechanisms driven by functionality and performance. His groundbreaking contributions extend to the dynamic performance evaluation of aerospace and nuclear power equipment, the invention of large heavy-duty forging machines, and the development of intelligent six-legged robots.

As a professor at the Institute of Major Equipment Design and Control Engineering, Professor Gao has dedicated his career to researching the design theory and application technology of parallel mechanisms. He has led several significant national projects, including the National 973 Program (as Chief), the National 863 Program, and key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation. His accolades include the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, four provincial and ministerial first prizes, the ASME Da Vinci Award, and the He Liang He Li Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award.

Professor Gao has also served as the Director of the National Key Laboratory of Mechanical Systems and Vibration and has been a member of the ASME Mechanisms and Robotics Committee. Additionally, he has held editorial roles for international journals such as Robotica and Engineering, and is the Deputy Editor of the Journal of Mechanical Engineering (English version).

Notably, the research outcome of the six-legged robot has been featured at events such as the Beijing Winter Olympics and on CCTV-1. A model of this robot is part of the collection at the Historical Exhibition Hall of the Communist Party of China.

The ASME Machine Design Award was established in 1958 by the ASME Design Engineering Division to recognize outstanding achievements in mechanical design. To date, only three scholars of Chinese descent have received this honor. The other two awardees are Dai Jiansheng, an alumnus of the Class of 1982 (Bachelor’s) and Class of 1984 (Master’s) from the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Ge Qiaode, a Bachelor’s alumnus from the Class of 1985, who is an expert in computational motion geometry.
