New National Standards for Electric Vehicle Batteries to be Implemented by July 2026

New

The new national standard for electric vehicle batteries is set to be implemented on April 25, 2025. This standard, known as GB 38031-2025, aims to enhance safety requirements for electric vehicle batteries. The new regulations will require stricter testing protocols to ensure battery safety, including assessments of battery leakage, thermal stability, and performance during extreme conditions. It will also specify that electric vehicle batteries must not catch fire or explode during standard testing procedures.

According to reports, there are currently 37.6 million electric vehicles in the United States, and approximately 120 million electric vehicles are expected to be on the market by 2026. The push for enhanced safety standards follows a series of incidents involving electric vehicle fires, prompting regulators to tighten safety measures. Notably, on March 29, 2023, a small SU7 electric vehicle was involved in a fatal accident, raising concerns about the safety of electric vehicles.

The new standards will require that electric vehicle batteries remain stable and safe under various conditions. This includes ensuring that batteries do not overheat or leak during operation. In addition, the standards will specify that electric vehicle batteries must withstand certain levels of impact without failing. The goal is to prevent accidents and injuries related to battery malfunctions.

Starting from July 1, 2026, all new electric vehicles must comply with these updated standards. Manufacturers will need to ensure that their batteries meet the new requirements, which may involve redesigning existing battery systems. The regulations are expected to reduce the risk of accidents caused by battery failures, ultimately enhancing consumer confidence in electric vehicles.

As the industry moves towards these new standards, manufacturers are encouraged to invest in research and development to improve battery safety and performance. The goal is to create a safer and more reliable electric vehicle market, paving the way for greater adoption of electric vehicles in the future.
