Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently shed light on the specifications of the highly anticipated iPhone Fold. Notably, he mentioned that this foldable device will feature the same high-density battery cells as the much-discussed iPhone 17 Air.
Rumors surrounding the iPhone 17 Air suggest that Apple is exploring a 3D-stacked battery design for this model. Traditional smartphone batteries, including those used in iPhones, typically employ a rolling method. This technique rolls the cathode, separator, and anode into a cylindrical structure known as a “jelly roll.” In contrast, stacked batteries layer these components flatly on top of each other, akin to steps. This innovative arrangement enhances volume efficiency, resulting in increased battery energy density. Utilizing 3D stacked technology could potentially boost battery capacity by at least 10%.
According to a leak from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the battery for the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be between 3,000 mAh and 4,000 mAh. However, the true advantage for the device’s battery life may lie in the C1 chip.
While Apple’s 5G modem may not be the leading option on the market, it is recognized for its exceptional power efficiency. Reports indicate that Apple intends to incorporate this modem into the iPhone 17 Air. Additionally, the iPhone 16e may provide insights into design modifications for this new model, as Apple has successfully redesigned internal components to accommodate a substantial 4,005 mAh battery.
It is reasonable to expect that the iPhone 17 Air will deliver battery life comparable to that of the iPhone 13 mini, or possibly even slightly better, thanks to software optimizations and the new C1 chip. This device will lay the groundwork for the iPhone Fold, which will feature a 7-inch+ display, allowing for a larger battery capacity. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Air will maintain a slim profile.
Finally, should Samsung release the Galaxy S25 Edge first, we will gain valuable insights into how the iPhone 17 Air performs in real-world usage, particularly since these devices are likely to share similar specifications.
