The Smartstack energy storage platform from Fluence Energy is now commercially available for grid-scale applications, with deliveries of the AC-based system expected to commence in Q4 2025. The innovative, patent-pending design of Smartstack divides battery storage systems into units that are lightweight and easily transportable. This approach effectively reduces shipping constraints and simplifies installation processes.
Once onsite, the system maximizes project site density, achieving an impressive energy density of up to 7.5 MWh when utilizing 300-Ah generation batteries. This energy density is approximately 30% higher than that of currently available AC-based systems, allowing for increased megawatt-hour generation within existing project footprints. As a result, costs are reduced, and previously constrained sites become viable for storage project development.
Smartstack redefines energy storage design with its flexible modular architecture, which can be customized to meet various market demands. It offers two- and four-hour storage durations, as well as longer durations of six and eight hours, all of which are available for sale now.
The product’s unique structure comprises two key components:
– Smart Skid: This base platform contains the core components of the Smartstack system, including advanced cooling equipment, power control system hardware, cabling, and comprehensive monitoring capabilities, all with easy maintenance access.
– Pods: Smartstack battery pods are mounted on top of the Smart Skid and contain the battery cells. These pods can accommodate cells from multiple vendors, ensuring competitive pricing and optimal performance. Additionally, the pods are designed for easy replacement during maintenance or technology upgrades, which helps maximize system availability.
Julian Nebreda, President & CEO of Fluence, stated, “Fluence’s track record of innovation and speed of execution drives us as we guide the energy storage industry forward. Backed by our industry-leading expertise in developing and deploying innovative solutions globally, Smartstack reimagines how systems are designed, built, and maintained. By tackling critical challenges such as supply chain shipping constraints, product density, serviceability, and modularity, we are providing a platform that is more scalable and easier to operate than competing solutions, leading to superior project economics for our customers.”
Smartstack is guaranteed to deliver up to 99% availability with Fluence’s long-term service agreement, which aims to maximize revenue generation. Its innovative approach emphasizes intelligence over hardware, enhancing system intelligence with locally deployed AI that autonomously optimizes embedded controls while providing comprehensive visibility across storage portfolios.
The modular design of Smartstack also facilitates a more agile and cost-effective supply chain localization strategy, allowing for regional sourcing or manufacturing of components. This optimizes availability, cost, and compliance while boosting resilience against geopolitical and logistical disruptions.
Mark Berger, Fluence VP of Product and Program Management, emphasized, “Smartstack maintains Fluence’s uncompromising commitment to safety and cybersecurity, incorporating multi-layer protection systems. The platform integrates the same industry-leading safety features as our trusted Gridstack products, which includes large-scale fire testing certification, now at a much higher density. These advanced safety features work together to prevent, detect, and contain thermal events, minimizing potential damage and downtime. Our unwavering commitment to safety is at the heart of every product we deliver, and Smartstack is no exception.”
