China’s hybrid vehicles have entered the “open-source era”! On April 10, Chery Automobile held its “Hybrid Night” in Wuhu, showcasing its latest advancements in hybrid technology, including the new generation Kunpeng super hybrid CDM/CEM. This event featured the unveiling of Chery’s new dedicated hybrid engines and DHT technology, along with a declaration of global hybrid technology standards and an open-source plan aimed at accelerating the worldwide adoption of hybrid technology—allowing the benefits of Chinese hybrid technology to be shared globally.

Hybrid technology is now increasingly seen as a viable direction for the future of fuel vehicles. Hybrid models (HEV, PHEV, REEV) are gaining attention due to their unique advantages, showcasing vast development potential. Once viewed skeptically, hybrid models have experienced explosive growth over the past two years, positioning themselves as serious competitors to fully electric vehicles, which have been enjoying considerable market advantages. This shift reflects a rational consumer choice based on product features, application scenarios, and usage costs.

The growing preference for hybrid vehicles among manufacturers and consumers can be attributed to several key advantages. Firstly, hybrid vehicles excel in fuel efficiency and emissions reduction by combining the strengths of traditional internal combustion engines and electric drive systems, achieving high fuel utilization and lower exhaust emissions. Secondly, unlike fully electric vehicles, hybrids alleviate concerns over range anxiety and charging, particularly in low-temperature environments. Additionally, hybrids often deliver superior performance and driving experiences, sometimes outperforming their fuel counterparts.

Market data indicates a rapid upward trend for hybrid vehicles. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), the sales of hybrid vehicles in China have shown consistent growth from 2018 to 2024, with a significant increase since 2021. By 2024, plug-in hybrid vehicles are projected to comprise around 70% of the hybrid vehicle market, with range-extended electric vehicles accounting for 16%. The production share of hybrid vehicles has also risen from 1.68% in 2018 to an expected 23.07% in 2024, demonstrating a steady increase in market penetration.

The "Energy Saving and New Energy Roadmap 2.0" indicates that hybrid vehicle sales should exceed 50% of traditional fuel-powered passenger cars by 2025, surpass 75% by 2030, and reach 100% by 2035. By 2030, the market size for hybrid vehicles in China is projected to exceed 4 trillion yuan, reflecting the growing popularity and immense potential for future development.

Chery’s impressive lineup highlights the future direction of travel technology. Drawing on years of technical expertise and addressing current market needs and consumer pain points, Chery has prepared an exquisite "technical feast" for global guests, showcasing its latest hybrid technologies. To meet the diverse vehicle requirements of global users, Chery has developed a comprehensive Kunpeng power architecture encompassing fuel, hybrid, pure electric, and hydrogen energy technologies, defining new benchmarks for hybrid standards worldwide and showcasing the new value of Chinese hybrid technology.

At the event, Chery presented its full-power platform, featuring a super hybrid off-road platform, a super golden range-extended platform, a high-performance electric platform, and a super hybrid platform. The showcase included the latest 1.5L efficient dedicated hybrid engine, 1.5TGDI efficient dedicated hybrid engine, and 2.0TGDI efficient dedicated hybrid engine, among other power sources. Additionally, innovations such as hydrogen engines and a 7-in-1 super electric drive were displayed, illustrating Chery’s forward-looking vision.

Since 2001, Chery has been focused on hybrid technology development. Over 24 years of iterations, it has transformed from a "follower" to a "leader." Today, Chery's hybrid products are exported to all five continents, ranking first in sales across multiple markets. The complex global driving environment and abundant data have laid a solid foundation for Chery's world-class hybrid technology.

As part of its commitment to safety, Chery ensures that its hybrid technology meets global standards that exceed industry norms. Through comprehensive global testing covering nine major regions and 44 anchor countries, with over 1 million kilometers of vehicle testing, Chery aims to provide safer and more reliable hybrid travel experiences for users worldwide.

By 2025, Chery plans to launch 39 hybrid models, including 3 HEV, 28 PHEV, and 8 REEV vehicles, across its various brands. This initiative is designed to accelerate the global proliferation of Chinese hybrid technology.

During the event, Chery announced a global hybrid technology declaration in collaboration with the China Automotive Standardization Research Institute, advocating for higher industry standards and accelerating the spread of hybrid technology globally. In the presence of several leading universities, Chery also launched an open-source plan, ushering hybrid technology into a new era of accessibility, allowing the world to benefit from Chinese hybrid innovations.

Chery's continuous breakthroughs in hybrid technology not only showcase its strength but also represent a commitment to advancing global hybrid technology and demonstrate the responsibilities of Chinese brands, gradually becoming a significant driving force in the development of hybrid technology worldwide.
