Baker Hughes and Frontier Infrastructure Form Partnership to Boost Carbon Capture and Storage, Data Center Projects in the U.S.

Baker Hughes, an energy technology leader, and Frontier Infrastructure, a prominent developer of low-carbon infrastructure in the U.S. Mountain West and Texas, have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the deployment of large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) and power generation solutions across the United States.

As part of this collaboration, Baker Hughes will provide advanced technologies and resources to support the development of significant CCS initiatives, power generation projects, and data centers. Frontier is spearheading the development of the Sweetwater Carbon Storage Hub (SCS Hub), one of the largest open-access carbon sequestration assets in the nation. Covering nearly 100,000 acres in Wyoming, the hub is designed to accommodate industrial emitters throughout the region and ethanol production facilities in the Midwest through its innovative CO₂-by-rail strategy. This positions Frontier as a new benchmark for scalable carbon storage infrastructure.

Currently, Frontier holds three Class VI permits and has begun drilling activities on its initial wells, with CO₂ injection anticipated to commence by the end of 2025. Under the terms of the partnership, Baker Hughes will deliver technology solutions that enhance the development of the SCS Hub and future infrastructure projects. By utilizing its expertise in well design, CO₂ compression, and long-term monitoring, Baker Hughes will optimize project execution, enabling Frontier to advance with increased efficiency and financial certainty.

To further develop reliable, low-carbon energy solutions, Frontier is also expanding its infrastructure with new behind-the-meter power generation capacity. This initiative includes the construction of 256 megawatts (MW) of gas-fired generation, aimed at meeting the growing power demands in Wyoming, the broader Mountain West, and Texas, particularly driven by the rapid expansion of data centers and industrial operations. Baker Hughes’ industrial NovaLT™ gas turbines will be deployed to support this power generation, ensuring efficient and flexible energy delivery for Frontier’s projects.

Robby Rockey, President and Co-CEO of Frontier Infrastructure, emphasized the need for scalable, low-carbon solutions as energy demand rises across the country. “By integrating gas-fired energy with the potential for permanent carbon storage, we are creating a direct and reliable power solution tailored to evolving industrial needs. Baker Hughes’ leadership in turbine technology, drilling services, and CCS innovation makes them an ideal partner in executing this vision,” he stated.

Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, affirmed the company’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions that address the increasing energy demand, partly driven by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, while also facilitating the decarbonization of the industry. “Partnering with Frontier Infrastructure presents a significant opportunity to showcase how Baker Hughes’ portfolio is uniquely positioned to support carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects for lower-carbon industrial and energy development,” he added.

As the partnership progresses, Baker Hughes anticipates receiving orders related to this agreement. Frontier is backed by Tailwater Capital, a private equity firm specializing in integrated energy and environmental infrastructure investments, with Jefferies LLC serving as its financial advisor and Sidley Austin LLP as its legal advisor.
