ZF Unveils Next-Generation Electric Drive Range Extender System, Set for 2026 Production

ZF

ZF Friedrichshafen AG has announced the launch of a new generation of its electric drive range extender system, with plans for mass production set to begin in 2026. In recent years, ZF has already brought electric drive range extender technology into production, with its motors currently being used in London taxis.

Currently, ZF is developing its next generation products, which include the electric range extender system (eRE) and the electric range extender drive system (eRE+).

Both of these products feature a highly integrated design, providing significant flexibility in terms of performance, electrical architecture, system voltage (400 volts or 800 volts), and semiconductor options. The eRE integrates the motor with an inverter, compatible software, and a planetary gear set. In contrast, the eRE+ builds upon this with the addition of a smart clutch and differential, allowing it to function both as a power generation unit and as a secondary drive system, thereby reducing development costs for automakers who would otherwise need to create separate components.

The performance of both systems is adjustable, with the eRE offering an output power range of 70-110 kW and the eRE+ ranging from 70-150 kW. ZF claims that compared to parallel hybrid solutions, such as plug-in hybrids, the electric range extender system is more cost-effective, has a shorter development cycle, requires less investment in platform development, and simplifies supply chain management. This technology is especially appealing to automakers entering the automotive market with limited experience in traditional fuel vehicle drivetrains.

Currently, the Chinese market is actively promoting range-extended electric vehicles (REEV), leveraging this technology to achieve vehicle ranges exceeding 700 kilometers.
