Wind and Solar Lead New Power Capacity Additions in Early 2025

According to data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), reviewed by the Sun Day Campaign, wind and solar energy together accounted for nearly 96% of the new utility-scale electricity generating capacity added in the United States during the first four months of 2025.

From January to April 2025, 2,183 MW of new wind capacity was installed, which represents 18% of all new additions. Solar energy led the way with 9,451 MW installed in the same period, comprising 77.7% of the total. Together, wind and solar contributed 95.7% of all new capacity brought online. In contrast, natural gas added only 511 MW (or 4.2%), while oil contributed a mere 11 MW (or 0.1%).

Currently, wind and solar each represent more than 10% of the total installed utility-scale capacity in the USA, with wind at 11.8% and solar at 11.0%. Combined, they account for 22.8% of the total capacity. When factoring in hydropower (7.7%), biomass (1.1%), and geothermal (0.3%), renewable energy sources make up 31.8% of the installed utility-scale capacity.

Furthermore, when including small-scale solar installations, renewables now provide approximately one-third of the total electricity generating capacity in the country.
