- Photovoltaic (PV) Systems: These systems must provide electricity for the residence and meet applicable fire and electrical code requirements. The tax credit includes installation costs.
- Solar Water Heaters: These must be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) or a comparable entity endorsed by the government of the state where the property is installed. The water must be used within the dwelling, and at least half of the energy generated must come from the sun.
- Geothermal Systems, Fuel Cells, and Battery Storage: These are also eligible under the broader Residential Clean Energy Credit, which includes solar energy systems.
To qualify, you must own your solar energy system, and there are no caps on the value you can claim or income limits for claiming the credit. Rentals do not qualify, but both principal residences and second homes are eligible.
