WFEO Chairman Zeng Chengshan: The industry must accelerate technology development and strengthen implementation to achieve carbon neutrality goals.

On October 18, 2025, during a conference in Shanghai, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) emphasized the need for rapid technological advancements in the industry to reach carbon neutrality targets. Zeng Chengshan, the chairman of WFEO, highlighted various dimensions of green technology, artificial intelligence, and sustainable engineering practices that need to be shared globally.

The conference, which took place from October 16 to 18, featured discussions on topics such as green engineering practices and the role of AI in promoting sustainable development. Zeng pointed out that solar, wind, and hydro energy sources are currently critical focuses in energy development. He noted that industries like construction and mining must aim to reduce carbon emissions significantly.

Zeng emphasized that achieving carbon neutrality is a pressing requirement for the industry. “Our goal is to maintain a temperature increase of no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve this, rapid technological innovation must be prioritized,” he stated.

In addition, Zeng pointed out that the WFEO is dedicated to fostering collaboration among engineering professionals worldwide. This includes establishing a learning platform that offers flexibility in training for engineers from various countries.

He further stressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change and enhancing the capability of green technologies. The WFEO aims to provide resources and support for countries that face challenges in transitioning to sustainable practices.

Addressing the impact of artificial intelligence on the industry, Zeng stated that AI is a crucial driver of continuous development. He asserted that while AI can enhance productivity and efficiency, there are concerns regarding its misuse and the potential risks associated with misinformation.

Zeng concluded by emphasizing the need for appropriate guidelines to ensure that AI is utilized correctly within the industry. He noted that China is a significant player in the global engineering community, and its engineers are essential for advancing technology and sustainable practices globally.
