Weekly Energy Storage Project Update (May 19-23, 2025)

During the past week, several energy storage projects have made significant progress. Below is a summary of updates on energy storage projects announced from May 19 to May 23, 2025:

200MW/800MWh Energy Storage Plant in Qinghai Begins Operation

On May 16, the Qinghai Company’s integrated energy storage station at the Dazhaidan 1 million kilowatt wind-solar project successfully began operations. This facility has a total installed capacity of 200 megawatts/800 megawatt-hours and utilizes eight different types of energy storage technologies, including centralized and high-voltage direct-connected lithium iron phosphate batteries, sodium-ion batteries, semi-solid lithium phosphate batteries, lithium titanate batteries, vanadium flow batteries, supercapacitors, and magnetic levitation vacuum flywheel storage. It is currently the most diverse energy storage plant in China.

Successful Commissioning of 255MW/4h Energy Storage Project

On May 15, the final group of the 255MW×4h energy storage project in Hainan Talar, Qinghai, successfully connected to the grid, marking the project’s full capacity operation. This project is the largest electrochemical energy storage plant built by the State Energy Group. Located in the photovoltaic industrial park of Gonghe County, the project consists of 56 storage units and two high-voltage cascading storage subsystems. It is expected to discharge around 285,600 megawatt-hours annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 378.14 tons each year.

100MW/400MWh Independent Energy Storage Project Launched in Inner Mongolia

On May 16, the government of Kailu County in Tongliao City signed an agreement with Zhongcheng Huimin Investment Development (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. for a 100MW/400MWh energy storage project. The total investment for this project is 600 million yuan, which includes the construction of a 220KV booster station and necessary ancillary facilities. The project is expected to enhance grid regulation capabilities and alleviate operational pressure on the power grid.

First Sodium-Ion Battery Power Storage Project Successfully Connected

Recently, a frequency modulation project using sodium-ion batteries at the Fugu Energy thermal power plant successfully connected to the grid. This project has a scale of 10MW/5MWh and uses a pioneering combination of 9MW/4.5MWh lithium iron phosphate battery and 1MW/0.5MWh sodium-ion battery, demonstrating significant technical advantages over traditional systems.

400MW/800MWh Independent Energy Storage Project Established in Yunnan

On May 19, Penghui Lihe (Tianjin) Energy Technology Co., Ltd. signed a contract for a 400MW/800MWh independent storage project in Wenshan, Yunnan. The project, with a total investment of 1 billion yuan, is expected to generate an annual output value of 15 million yuan and create 30 to 40 new jobs.

New 100MW/200MWh Independent Energy Storage Project in Hebei

On May 17, the new independent energy storage demonstration project in Xinxian City successfully connected to the grid. This project is a key storage demonstration project in Hebei Province, with a total investment of 170 million yuan.

6.264MWh Commercial Energy Storage Project Commences in Jiangsu

On May 19, Jiangsu Jiva New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. began construction on a 6.264MWh commercial energy storage project in Suzhou. This modular storage system will provide various services, including peak shaving and emergency backup, while reducing carbon emissions by over 800 tons annually.

New 600MW/1200MWh Storage Project in Yunnan

On May 23, the 600MW/1200MWh storage project in Shidian County, Yunnan, officially commenced operations. This project represents the largest single centralized shared storage project in Yunnan, with a total investment of 1.6 billion yuan.

200MW/200MWh Energy Storage Project in Shanxi Begins Operations

On May 22, the first phase of the 200MW/200MWh independent energy storage project in Jinzhong City successfully connected to the grid. This project has a registered capacity of 200MW/200MWh and is expected to enhance the region’s energy storage capabilities.

These developments reflect a growing trend in the energy sector towards advanced energy storage technologies and the integration of renewable energy sources, which will play a crucial role in ensuring a sustainable energy future.
