Photovoltaic Weekly Update: New Installations, Wind and Solar Storage Projects, and Company Developments

On May 3, 2025, we present a selection of significant events from the photovoltaic sector over the past week. The National Energy Administration has issued a notice supporting private enterprises’ participation in investments for the “Shage Desert” large-scale energy base. On a local level, Shanxi plans to cancel a 591.95 MW wind and solar storage project, while Inner Mongolia encourages long-term power purchase agreements between renewable energy companies and electricity users. Jiangsu has temporarily suspended requirements for the feed-in tariff ratio for distributed photovoltaic projects, and in Shanxi, the self-consumption ratio for distributed solar must be at least 50%. Meanwhile, the registration of photovoltaic projects in Juy County, Shandong has been paused.

In terms of photovoltaic data, the National Energy Administration reported an addition of 59.71 GW of new solar capacity in Q1 2025, with 4,408 new photovoltaic projects registered nationwide in March.

In the photovoltaic supply chain, NIWA has delivered its first all-black components domestically, setting a new benchmark for revolutionary projects. Canadian Solar has supported a 5.9 MW green smart manufacturing demonstration project in Shandong with its 320 kW inverters, while JinkoSolar has completed its first batch of 320 MW asset transactions with CITIC Financial Leasing.

Technology advancements include JinkoSolar delivering 1 GW of N-type TOPCon components for the CGN Delingha integrated solar-thermal project, while Shuangliang Energy has successfully passed TÜV Rheinland certification for its high-efficiency double-glass TOPCon modules. Additionally, Liansheng Photovoltaic Technology has achieved a maximum power output of 781.79 W for its 210-sized 0BB components, and Guangyin Technology has set a new record with a 31.55% efficiency for its all-perovskite tandem solar cells.

In corporate news, the Emergency Management Department’s Tianjin Fire Research Institute has signed a cooperation agreement with Huawei Digital Energy. Tongwei, alongside ACO and IRSC Renewable Energy Solutions, has signed a strategic framework agreement to develop a 75 MW solar project in Egypt as part of the country’s 2030 vision.

Recent procurement announcements include a public listing of candidates for the 2025-2026 photovoltaic components procurement by the China National Nuclear Corporation, with companies like JA Solar, LONGi Green Energy, and Trina Solar making the list.

Looking ahead, the photovoltaic industry continues to navigate challenges amid a competitive landscape, with emerging technologies and new projects pushing the boundaries of innovation.
