Volvo has officially unveiled its new SMA (Scalable Modular Architecture) hybrid platform, debuting with the XC70 model. This new architecture will work alongside Volvo’s pure electric SPA2 platform to facilitate the development of hybrid electric vehicles.
The SMA platform is designed to accommodate a wide range of vehicle types, from compact cars to larger SUVs, integrating both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems. Following the XC70’s introduction, Volvo plans to launch a mid-size SUV in September, featuring a purely electric range of up to 200 kilometers under the CLTC standard, with an estimated price between 400,000 to 500,000 yuan.
The XC70 will specifically serve as a flagship model in Volvo’s lineup of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Currently, the specifics of the hybrid power system for this SUV have yet to be disclosed.
Built on Volvo’s scalable architecture, the SMA platform supports “fast charging capabilities.” Similar to the previous-generation XC70, this new vehicle continues the tradition of offering a wide array of functionalities suitable for family-oriented vehicles, positioning itself as a “versatile all-rounder.”
The new model is larger than the XC60, providing more interior space and enhancing the design elements seen in other Volvo models, including the all-electric EX90 and the traditional fuel-powered XC90.
According to Volvo’s Executive Chairman Håkan Samuelsson, “The XC70 represents our commitment to developing plug-in hybrid vehicles that cater to the growing demand for electric mobility. This allows us to maintain a balanced product offering while meeting the evolving needs of consumers looking for alternatives to traditional combustion engines.”
In the coming months, more detailed information about the XC70 will be released.
