Viritech is set to enhance the performance of battery-electric vehicles by introducing fuel cell range extenders. This initiative will be showcased at the Hydrogen Technology Expo North America 2025, co-located with the Carbon Capture Technology Expo, taking place from June 25-26, 2025, at the NRG Center in Houston, Texas.
Recently, Viritech has embarked on a new project aimed at exploring the viability of hydrogen fuel cell range extenders (REX) for smaller vehicles, specifically targeting last-mile delivery vans to address battery-related challenges. The feasibility study will focus on integrating portable sub-5kW fuel cells with existing battery packs. This approach aims to extend the range of vehicles while maintaining normal payload capacity and adhering to regulatory standards.
Currently, Viritech is actively seeking collaboration with light commercial vehicle (LCV) original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and last-mile delivery operators. The company’s goal is to discuss how the fuel cell system can meet their specific needs. So far, this project has garnered support through a grant from the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT), awarded via the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) and Niche Vehicle Network.
In an online statement, Viritech highlighted the “significant market potential” for utilizing these solutions in both on-road and off-road electric vehicles. The company emphasized the benefits of using portable fuel cells alongside battery packs, aiming to “establish a gateway for creating an entirely new market for fuel cell technology.” They noted that current battery-electric last-mile delivery vehicles face limitations in range, especially under adverse conditions such as extreme weather, congested urban environments, and hilly terrains.
