Vikram Solar to Manufacture Solid-State Cell and Battery
Vikram Solar is set to establish a fully integrated manufacturing facility for solid-state cells and batteries with an initial capacity of 1 GWh, scalable to 5 GWh. This initiative aims to address the increasing global energy demands while utilizing proprietary technology that incorporates predominantly Indian-made components. The project aligns with India’s goals for self-reliance and renewable energy, focusing on the development of efficient battery storage systems.
On March 6, 2025, the company announced its plans to create this facility, which will also feature advanced battery management system (BMS) technology. Designed to meet the evolving energy needs of the global market, the facility is expected to play a crucial role in supporting India’s transition toward renewable energy.
Gyanesh Chaudhary, the Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, emphasized that the solid-state batteries will be developed using mostly locally sourced components, reinforcing the concept of ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) while contributing to India’s renewable energy and climate objectives.
Vikram Solar is collaborating with Entity2 Energy Storage Pvt Ltd., a partner with multiple patents for non-lithium solid-state battery technologies. This partnership will enable the production of scalable batteries designed to meet the increasing energy requirements.
According to a report by Crisil, India currently fulfills only 15-20% of its power needs from renewable energy sources. The revised target aims for 50% of energy requirements to come from renewable sources by 2030. To achieve this ambitious goal, significant investments in battery storage will be essential to accommodate the higher share of variable energy generation in the overall energy mix.
As the demand for continuous clean energy rises, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are emerging as a vital solution for effective energy storage.
