Vietnam’s Ambitious Push for Foreign Investment in Green Energy Transition

Vietnams

Recently, Vietnam has seen a significant increase in the share of renewable energy within its total installed power capacity. According to projections, by 2030, renewable energy is expected to account for 15% to 20% of the primary energy structure, with this figure anticipated to rise to 80% to 85% by 2050.

In this context, fostering technological innovation, deepening international cooperation, and facilitating technology transfer have become crucial pathways to implementing clean energy solutions, achieving net-zero emissions, and promoting sustainable economic development. These efforts are expected to bring profound and lasting benefits to both society and the national energy system.

Nguyen Thai Son, Executive Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Energy Association, stated, “We are encountering significant opportunities and challenges in the realm of sustainable energy development. Achieving net-zero emissions is not only about safeguarding the ecological environment; it is also a vital engine for future sustainable economic growth. With the government actively encouraging private capital to invest in the energy sector and accelerating the electricity market’s competitive mechanisms, Vietnam is offering unprecedented investment opportunities for both domestic and international companies.”

To meet its goal of achieving double-digit economic growth annually from 2026 to 2030, Vietnam’s demand for clean energy is on the rise. In addition to enhancing the internal drive of its energy industry, Vietnam is also intensifying its strategic cooperation in the energy sector with ASEAN countries and China. Chinese enterprises are optimistic about the development prospects of Vietnam’s new energy market, considering it a vast space for collaboration between businesses from both countries.

Experts believe that based on their friendly relationship, Vietnam and China possess significant cooperative potential in cross-border grid interconnections. This collaboration not only helps ensure regional energy security and improve the efficiency of energy resource allocation but also provides favorable conditions for both sides to deepen cooperation in the development of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, advanced technology transfer, and talent cultivation. This synergy is expected to inject new vitality into the region’s green transition.
