Trina Solar Achieves Top Ranking in Global Perovskite Solar Cell Patent Applications

Trina

Trina Solar has been ranked first in the global perovskite solar cell patent leaderboard, according to the comprehensive intellectual property information service provider IPRdaily. Today, IPRdaily released three significant rankings: the Global Solar Cell and Component Invention Patent Ranking (TOP 50), the Global Perovskite Solar Cell Invention Patent Ranking (TOP 30), and the Global TOPCon Solar Cell Invention Patent Ranking (TOP 30).

In the global perovskite patent landscape, Trina Solar stands out as the only Chinese company among the top three, holding 481 patent applications and surpassing the second place by nearly 40%. Additionally, Trina Solar secured the second position in both the global solar cell and component patent ranking and the global TOPCon solar cell invention patent ranking.

The three rankings are based on specific keywords and classification numbers related to perovskite solar cell technology, solar cell and component technology, and TOPCon solar cell technology. They account for patents applied for and published globally from April 1, 2015, to March 31, 2025 (consolidating applications with the same application number).

Perovskite solar cells are recognized as the next generation of photovoltaic technology, demonstrating significant development potential. They exhibit efficiency levels that are considerably higher than traditional silicon-based solar cells. Moreover, perovskite materials can be processed using low-temperature solution techniques, which reduces manufacturing costs and broadens application areas.

Since 2014, Trina Solar has consistently increased its investments and strategic positioning in the perovskite sector, leading the world with 481 perovskite patents, far ahead of international giants such as Panasonic (with 347 patents) and Oxford PV (with 365 patents). As noted by IPRdaily in their ranking analysis, Trina Solar has collaborated with Fudan University to establish a national key laboratory for photovoltaic science and technology. They are also working with over ten companies in the supply chain to create an innovation center for next-generation photovoltaic technology and equipment manufacturing. Trina Solar is actively developing new photovoltaic products—specifically crystalline silicon tandem solar cells—and has announced several world records in battery efficiency and module power in the field of perovskite crystalline silicon tandem technology.

Furthermore, Trina Solar has secured an exclusive license from Oxford PV for the research, manufacturing, sales, and distribution of perovskite battery technology and perovskite/perovskite tandem technology and perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem solar products in mainland China, along with exclusive rights for sublicensing to local manufacturers.

According to IPRdaily, Chinese companies and universities account for a remarkable 56% of perovskite patents, with Trina Solar being the only Chinese enterprise among the top three globally, leading the way in reshaping the global photovoltaic industry landscape.

IPRdaily also pointed out that TOPCon technology currently dominates the market and is particularly well-suited as the bottom cell in tandem batteries. The TOPCon + perovskite tandem cell technology is expected to continue thriving, with prospects for further efficiency improvements and expanded application areas. Over the past three years, Trina Solar's TOPCon patent applications have comprised 82.78% of its total applications over the last decade, showcasing industry-leading growth rates.

Trina Solar firmly believes that "protecting intellectual property is protecting innovation." The company continues to prioritize technological innovation as its primary driving force, consistently promoting the synergy of technological research and development, intellectual property, and industry standards. This commitment enhances the research and industrialization of perovskite crystalline silicon tandem technology, contributing to global energy transformation.
