TotalEnergies’ Saft to Provide Battery Energy Storage System for Fukushima Project

TotalEnergies

Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has been chosen by the Asian renewable energy developer Gurīn Energy to supply a battery energy storage system (BESS) for a significant project in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This system will play a crucial role in Gurīn Energy’s stand-alone energy storage initiative in Soma City, with construction set to commence in 2026.

Once operational, the BESS is expected to deliver over 240 MW of power for up to four hours. Saft will provide a fully integrated lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery system that boasts a total capacity exceeding 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh). The package will also include power conversion and management systems from Saft’s partners, along with the I-Sight cloud-based supervision and data management platform, which features AI-enabled capabilities. Additionally, Saft will oversee the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of the system.

This large-scale BESS is designed to enhance grid stability by storing electricity during periods of low demand and supplying it when necessary. This capability will improve the reliability of the energy supply and reduce the curtailment of renewable energy sources.

The project is in line with Japan’s broader energy objectives, which aim to increase the share of renewables in the electricity mix to 40–50 percent by 2040 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Currently, renewable energy contributes approximately 27 percent to Japan’s power generation.

Vincent Le Quintrec, Saft’s Sales and Marketing Director for Energy Storage Systems, emphasized that Asia is a critical region for the company’s long-term growth in energy storage and highlighted the project’s significance for Japan’s energy transition. Gurīn Energy’s Country Manager for Japan, Ushio Okuyama, stated that the Soma City project will enhance grid flexibility and contribute to energy transition efforts both locally and nationally.
