The Rise of Solar Energy: Germany’s Ambitious Plans for Solar System Expansion

The

Can solar energy achieve 100% sustainability? Is it time to explore a “hydrogen market”?

On May 25, 2025, solar energy was promoted in Europe, particularly in Germany, which is becoming a leader in this sector. According to the latest data released by BSW-Solar, by the end of 2024, Germany is expected to add 10.5 million solar systems, with 4.35 million of these being solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. This indicates that among every five solar systems installed, at least two will be solar PV systems.

Germany’s solar capacity is projected to grow by 100% and will surge ahead of other types of renewable energy. The fast expansion in capacity is driven by high electricity prices in Europe, particularly in Germany. In the first half of 2023, the average electricity cost reached €0.4162 per kilowatt-hour, ranking it among the highest in Europe.

In this context, the economic advantage of solar power is clear: a basic solar PV system typically costs around €600 (approximately $4,660) and consists of two 500W panels, generating 5 kilowatt-hours of electricity daily, leading to an annual production of approximately 1,500 kWh. This results in an annual savings of about €228.91 per household based on the average cost of electricity. Thus, the return on investment is achievable within just a few years.

Moreover, the unique characteristics of solar PV systems contribute to the growing demand in the market. Users need to secure their systems either through solar or wind power, linking them to the grid, which allows for the use of green energy models.

A typical solar PV system generally comprises 1-4 solar panels, micro-inverters, and supporting equipment, enabling flexibility in installation and customization for various building types, thereby expanding the application of renewable energy.

Germany is also working on new policies to enhance its solar market, ensuring that solar becomes a staple in the renewable energy landscape. The government is pushing for the establishment of a regulatory framework that supports the expansion of solar PV systems across the nation.

By 2025, Germany aims to reach a solar capacity of over 100 gigawatts, with solar PV systems playing a crucial role in this development. The data indicates that the country’s solar capacity could exceed 30 gigawatts, contributing significantly to the global energy transition.

In conclusion, as the solar energy landscape continues to evolve, Germany’s commitment to expanding its solar capacity and integrating innovative technologies will shape the future of renewable energy.
