The “Combined Heat and Power System” at the Sanhe Thermal Storage Power Station has commenced trial operations as of October 3, 2025. The trial was reported by People’s Network, indicating that the Sanhe Thermal Storage Power Station—a facility with a capacity of 700 megawatts—has started its testing phase. The power station is designed to enhance the stability of power supply through a combination of energy sources, including wind power, thermal power, and other renewable resources.
The testing aims to optimize the integration of the “Combined Heat and Power” model, which utilizes advanced technology for efficient energy management. This project is part of China’s broader efforts to establish a stable and sustainable energy supply, particularly in light of the increasing demand for clean energy solutions.
The Sanhe facility, with a total surface area of about 80 hectares, includes two major thermal storage units and employs advanced solar energy technologies. Its efficiency rate is projected to reach 94%, enabling it to harness solar energy effectively, thereby contributing to emission reduction goals. This facility is expected to play a significant role in balancing the energy grid with reliable outputs from both renewable and traditional energy sources.
With an innovative design that incorporates two large thermal storage tanks and a series of turbine generators, the plant aims to provide an annual electricity output of approximately 18 billion kilowatt-hours. This output will significantly contribute to the region’s energy mix and is anticipated to help reduce carbon emissions by around 153,000 tons annually.
The integration of this facility into the national grid represents a vital step in China’s commitment to achieving energy security while promoting sustainable development. The project exemplifies the shift towards a diversified energy strategy that includes renewable energy sources and enhances the overall resilience of the power system.
As part of the “14th Five-Year Plan,” this project underscores the importance of innovative energy solutions in the face of growing environmental challenges. The successful operation of the Sanhe Thermal Storage Power Station will not only improve energy efficiency but also support the national goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering greener energy production.
