Tesla has officially commenced production at its new Megapack battery factory in Shanghai as of February 11, 2025, according to a report from Azernews. This facility will complement the existing large electric vehicle manufacturing plant in the same city and is set to produce an impressive 10,000 Megapack units annually, which is equivalent to approximately 40 GWh of energy.
Tesla’s journey in energy storage began in early 2017 when it launched what was then the world’s largest backup energy storage facility, which utilized lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 20 MW and an energy capacity of 80 MWh. By 2019, the company introduced Megapack batteries, which replaced the earlier 200 kWh Powerpack 2 model. The Megapack boasts a significantly larger capacity of 3 MWh and output of 1.5 MW.
Located adjacent to Tesla’s existing electric vehicle plant in the Lingang district, the new facility will cater to both the domestic market and international exports. Each Megapack unit can power approximately 3,600 homes for one hour.
This expansion in battery production marks a pivotal move for Tesla as it aims to strengthen its position in the global energy storage market. Designed for utility-scale energy storage, the Megapack has the potential to transform how renewable energy is stored and distributed.
