Surging Demand for Electric Vehicle Batteries: China’s Growth Projections and Environmental Considerations

Surging

Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly becoming a part of the global automotive industry, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation. As of May 4, 2025, the demand for EVs is projected to continue its upward trajectory. Estimates suggest that the production of electric vehicles in China could reach 7.8 million units by 2025, 10.5 million units by 2027, and 23 million units by 2030. This growth is supported by a significant increase in the number of battery recycling companies, which play a crucial role in the circular economy. As of now, the number of battery recycling enterprises in China has already reached 17.2 million.

Industry experts and local government officials suggest that Shanghai should focus on enhancing the efficiency of its EV recycling systems. The city has seen a rapid increase in the number of electric vehicles, which has contributed to the region’s economic growth and environmental sustainability. The recycling of electric vehicle batteries is essential for reducing waste and harmful emissions, ensuring that the environmental impact is minimized.

The recycling process for electric vehicle batteries is not only necessary for resource recovery but also helps to alleviate the pressure on natural resources. In 2024, it is expected that China will have recycled 8.3 million tons of lithium batteries, 14.5 million tons of nickel, and 2.9 million tons of cobalt, meeting approximately 20%, 25%, and 11% of the respective demands.

Furthermore, the circular economy surrounding electric vehicles has become increasingly important. The recycling of batteries is not just a matter of resource recovery; it significantly contributes to reducing the environmental footprint of electric vehicles. It has been reported that every ton of lithium battery recycled can prevent the pollution of 6,000 liters of water or can save an area of land equivalent to 50 hectares from contamination over a period of 50 years.

In recent years, the production of electric vehicles in China has skyrocketed. In 2024, the annual production capacity is projected to reach 1.286 million units. This growth is supported by policies encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles and the establishment of robust recycling systems.

As part of the initiative to enhance battery recycling efficiency, Shanghai aims to develop new technology that can improve the recycling rates of electric vehicle batteries. The goal is to ensure that at least 85% of batteries can be recycled, and battery packs should not exceed a recycling rate of 98%, with minimal waste generated.

In conclusion, the electric vehicle industry is poised for substantial growth, driven by advancements in battery recycling technologies and increasing consumer demand. With policies supporting sustainable practices and robust recycling initiatives, the future of electric vehicles looks promising.
