Sunrun’s Distributed Power Plant Capacity Surpasses 650 Megawatts, Enhancing Grid Reliability Ahead of Summer Heat and Hurricanes

Sunrun, the largest residential energy generation company in the United States, is utilizing batteries paired with solar power to bolster grid reliability and provide backup power during outages.

On June 11, 2025, Sunrun Inc. (Nasdaq: RUN), based in San Francisco, announced the activation of more than 130,000 home batteries, which constitutes over two-thirds of its total battery fleet, to support the nation’s power grid this summer. Through its grid service programs, Sunrun can dispatch 650 megawatts of peak power—enough to supply energy to 480,000 homes or a city the size of Austin, Texas—during critical periods each day to meet the increasing demand for electricity across the country.

“America is entering a period of insatiable energy demand driven by manufacturing, data centers, and AI,” stated Sunrun CEO Mary Powell. “By focusing on pairing storage with solar, Sunrun is well-positioned to rapidly deploy new generating capacity to stabilize the grid and lead the nation toward energy independence.”

Sunrun’s storage-first strategy has placed the company among the top five energy storage operators nationwide, with nearly one gigawatt of total battery capacity installed—equivalent to the peak power output of a nuclear power plant. As the largest provider and operator of distributed battery power plants globally, Sunrun achieved a storage attachment rate of nearly 70% among new solar customers in the first quarter of the year, accounting for approximately half of all new home battery installations in the U.S.

Recently, Sunrun’s dispatchable power plants supplied hundreds of megawatts of peak power to the grid across various states:

– **Texas**: Sunrun provided essential energy during unusually hot temperatures, helping to control costs for customers of two retail electricity providers.
– **Arizona**: Arizona Public Service called on Sunrun for three consecutive days for essential energy during hot weather.
– **California**: Sunrun’s statewide residential battery power plant dispatched an average of over 300 megawatts during a recent two-hour peak load window.
– **New York**: Orange and Rockland Utilities activated Sunrun’s residential battery power plant—New York’s largest—multiple times this year to alleviate grid stress.
– **Puerto Rico**: In response to capacity shortages from centralized power plants, the island’s utility provider, LUMA, requested Sunrun to deploy stored solar energy during 26 emergency power events since January.

As the U.S. prepares for energy demand spikes and rising temperatures, utilities and grid operators are proactively planning future battery dispatches to stabilize the grid and enhance reliability. Notably, both Orange and Rockland and LUMA have asked Sunrun to prepare for emergency dispatches as they anticipate unusually high temperatures.

In collaboration with electric utilities nationwide, Sunrun operates 17 dispatchable power plant programs that enhance reliability and help prevent blackouts. With the unique capability to deploy utility-scale battery capacity within months, Sunrun delivers critical grid services with unmatched speed. These programs also assist utilities in avoiding or postponing transmission and distribution investments, ultimately saving money for families connected to the grid.

Sunrun’s subscription model is pivotal for aggregating, managing, and dispatching hundreds of thousands of home batteries to improve grid reliability. The 48E investment tax credit facilitates the construction of this essential grid infrastructure, addressing America’s looming electricity supply crisis.
