Sunrun Delivers Over 340 Megawatts of Power Nationwide to Support Grid During Heat Wave

Sunrun has announced that its fleet of home batteries, part of distributed power plants, dispatched over 340 megawatts of peak power on the evening of June 24, 2025, to support power grids across California, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico. This initiative comes as grid operators work diligently to prevent rotating blackouts amid a significant heat wave affecting the East Coast. The sustained high temperatures have led to congestion and overheating of transmission lines, resulting in a sharp increase in wholesale electricity prices. Traditional power plants have struggled to meet the surging demand for electricity due to their reduced efficiency in extreme heat.

“This summer is proving challenging for grid operators, as extreme heat and rising demand again push our aging infrastructure to its limits,” said Mary Powell, CEO of Sunrun. “Home storage combined with solar energy is a reliable and controllable resource that can provide on-demand power to the grid, helping to prevent blackouts and lower energy costs for all households. We must fully embrace these technologies if we are to achieve energy security for America.”

On that Tuesday evening, Sunrun responded to urgent requests for emergency power by dispatching stored energy from home batteries to the grid during the intense heat. The contribution from thousands of Sunrun batteries helped to alleviate energy reserves while decreasing the reliance on expensive and polluting peaker power plants. In New York, this marked Sunrun’s fourth dispatch event within a week, effectively relieving stress on congested circuits identified by the utility partner. Three additional power-sharing events are scheduled for the upcoming week in New York.

In Puerto Rico, Sunrun activated over 5,600 batteries in less than an hour to support the island’s utility provider amid power generation shortfalls. In California, the fleet of home batteries dispatched 325 megawatts of peak power, acting similarly to a traditional power plant and significantly reducing the state’s evening peak demand for electricity from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., a time when families typically increase their use of appliances and air conditioning after solar generation ceases.

“Our distributed power plants are prepared to help create a more resilient and cost-effective grid,” stated Chris Rauscher, Vice President of Grid Services at Sunrun. “We are executing this on a large scale and delivering real value at present. With an aging grid and increasing demand, it is evident that the need for this capacity will continue to grow exponentially.”

With nearly one gigawatt of total battery capacity installed—equivalent to the peak power output of a nuclear power plant—Sunrun stands as the largest provider and operator of distributed battery power plants worldwide. Unlike traditional power plants, Sunrun can deploy battery capacity comparable to that of a utility-scale battery or peaker plant in just a few months, showcasing an unmatched speed. The company’s subscription model is essential for aggregating, managing, and dispatching hundreds of thousands of home batteries to enhance grid reliability.
