Sunrun Delivers Over 340 Megawatts of Power in One Evening to Support the Grid Nationwide

As numerous regions across the country experience a severe heat wave with temperatures soaring into the triple digits, Sunrun has responded to urgent calls for energy support by dispatching crucial power from home batteries paired with solar energy.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 25, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sunrun (Nasdaq: RUN) announced today that its network of home batteries, part of distributed power plants, delivered over 340 megawatts of peak power on the evening of June 24. This power was dispatched to support electrical grids in California, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico. These actions come as grid operators work to avert rotating blackouts amid a heat wave affecting the East Coast.

The extended heat has led to congestion and overheating of transmission lines, causing significant spikes in wholesale electricity prices. As temperatures rise, the efficiency of conventional power plants declines, making it difficult for utilities to meet the increasing demand for electricity.

“This summer is proving challenging for grid operators, as extreme heat and rising demand are pushing our aging infrastructure to its limits,” said Sunrun CEO Mary Powell. “Home storage paired with solar is a reliable and controllable resource that can provide on-demand power to the grid, helping to prevent blackouts and reduce energy prices for all households. We must fully embrace these technologies if we’re to achieve energy security for America.”

On Tuesday evening, in response to emergency power requests, Sunrun dispatched energy from home batteries to the grid during the oppressive heat affecting the East Coast. The surge of power from thousands of Sunrun batteries helped bridge the energy reserve gap while decreasing reliance on costly and polluting peaker power plants.

In New York, Sunrun completed its fourth dispatch event in just one week, aiding in reducing stress on congested circuits identified by its utility partner. Three additional power-sharing events in New York are scheduled for the upcoming week. In Puerto Rico, Sunrun activated over 5,600 batteries in under an hour to assist the island’s utility provider during power generation shortfalls.

In California, Sunrun’s fleet of home batteries participated in a statewide distributed power plant, dispatching 325 megawatts of peak power. The activated batteries functioned similarly to a traditional power plant, significantly reducing the state’s peak electricity demand from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., a time when households typically ramp up their use of appliances and air conditioning after solar energy production has ceased.

“Our distributed power plants are poised to enhance a more resilient and cost-effective grid,” stated Chris Rauscher, Vice President of Grid Services at Sunrun. “We are operating at scale and creating real value right now. Given the aging grid and rising demand, the need for this capacity will continue to grow exponentially.”

With nearly a gigawatt of total battery capacity installed—equivalent to the output of a nuclear power plant—Sunrun is recognized as the largest distributed battery power plant provider and operator worldwide. Unlike traditional power plants, Sunrun can deploy battery capacity comparable to a utility-scale battery or even a peaker power plant within months, achieving unmatched speed. Sunrun’s subscription model is crucial for its ability to aggregate, manage, and dispatch hundreds of thousands of home batteries, thereby enhancing grid reliability.
