State Power Investment Corporation Operates 132 New Energy Storage Projects with a Total Capacity of 4934MW/10956MWh

State

As of March 2025, China National Energy Group has successfully implemented 132 new energy storage projects with a total capacity of 4934 MW and 10956 MWh. This initiative aligns with the country’s goals for carbon neutrality and energy transition. The energy group has made significant advancements in the research and construction of new energy storage technologies.

Among the 132 operational energy storage projects, the majority—128 projects—are based on electrochemical storage, accounting for 95% of the total installed capacity. The group has actively sought to innovate and move beyond single storage technology, establishing a diverse technology matrix. Notable projects include:

The Taishan Power Plant in Guangdong, which hosts the largest coal power integrated electrochemical storage project in China.

The Lingwu Power Plant in Ningxia, recognized as the world's largest single-unit flywheel project, filling a gap in the field of flywheel storage for thermal power frequency regulation.

The Penglai Power Plant in Shandong, which is the first in China to utilize a four-dimensional composite smart storage system combining lithium iron phosphate, sodium ions, all-vanadium flow batteries, and flywheel technology.

The Longshan Power Plant in Hebei, featuring the nation’s first 600 MW steam extraction molten salt energy storage project, capable of both peak shaving and peak load shifting.

China National Energy Group's new energy storage projects focus on four major scenarios: renewable energy integration, coal power integration, independent storage, and shared storage. This approach has generated differentiated solutions that enhance both economic benefits and system value. Currently, nearly 70% of their energy storage projects are related to the integration of renewable energy, significantly improving the frequency regulation performance of coal plants and facilitating their transition from base load to regulating power sources.

Data shows that the average daily charge and discharge frequency of renewable energy integration projects exceeds the industry average. The independent storage projects demonstrate a remarkable system adjustment capability, playing a crucial role in enhancing grid flexibility and stability.

Going forward, China National Energy Group aims to deepen its new energy storage construction with a focus on scientific planning tailored to local conditions. This will involve analyzing resources and demand according to grid planning to layout energy storage demonstration projects. The company plans to coordinate regional energy storage stations through provincial subsidiaries to achieve systematic and scaled development. In key areas with policy support and high renewable energy concentration, they will strategically position storage based on demand and cost-effectiveness.

The group is also committed to strengthening the demonstration of new energy storage technologies and exploring new methods such as compressed air energy storage to promote market-oriented operation. By flexibly allocating user-side storage and taking advantage of peak-valley price differences, they aim to drive high-quality development in new energy storage, contributing to the realization of carbon neutrality goals and the intelligent transformation of the energy sector.
