Solar-Powered Parking Project Delivers Early Energy Savings and Strengthens Local Grid

Samal City’s latest renewable energy initiative is already yielding impressive results, both economically and environmentally. The city’s PHP50 million solar-powered parking structure, situated on the grounds of the Samal City Hall, has achieved over PHP132,000 in electricity savings just weeks after its official commissioning in May 2025, as reported by the city government. This facility is part of the city’s larger strategy to enhance clean energy adoption and decrease reliance on traditional energy sources. By adding capacity to the local grid, the system is crucial in strengthening Samal’s power supply, particularly in light of the area’s frequent power outages.

Project Specifications

The solar-powered structure includes a 500 kVA grid-tied system made up of 1,036 solar panels, each with a capacity of 450 watts. Covering an area of 2,690 square meters, the facility not only serves as a shaded parking area but also provides over 190 parking spaces, optimizing land use while generating energy. Developed in collaboration with the City Government of Samal, HG Agri Industrial Machineries, and Greenergy Development Corporation, the project was officially inaugurated on February 6, 2025. Since its launch, it has been continuously generating clean solar energy for the local grid.

Local Leadership and Climate-Resilient Development

City officials have emphasized the project’s dual advantages of improving energy security and promoting climate-resilient infrastructure. Outgoing Mayor Al David Uy noted that the solar parking structure represents a significant legacy project as he transitions to a new role, underscoring his administration’s commitment to sustainable development. The Samal City solar car park aligns with a growing national trend, as local government units across the Philippines increasingly invest in renewable energy solutions that balance cost efficiency with environmental responsibility.
