Smart Microgrid: Energy Abundance in a Carbon Society

The Green Economy initiative, led by the Provincial People’s Government, emphasizes the importance of transitioning to a low-carbon energy system. The integration of advanced technologies is critical for achieving these goals.

On September 30, 2025, ABB’s headquarters announced a significant advancement in renewable energy solutions. The company aims to produce over 1,000 megawatt-hours of green electricity annually, replacing at least 40% of the energy supply while reducing operational costs by 23%. This shift is expected to decrease carbon emissions by 1.34 million tons.

Due to the inherently intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like wind and solar, maintaining a stable electricity supply has become a challenge. Large-scale adoption of new energy sources must also ensure the reliability and stability of the electricity grid, highlighting the need for smart microgrid solutions.

The smart microgrid integrates distributed energy resources, energy storage, and demand response capabilities into a unified system, enabling effective self-management, protection, and control. This system can operate in conjunction with external power grids or as an isolated unit.

ABB’s green microgrid project has successfully generated 5800 million yuan in revenue and boasts a maximum output capacity of 12.3 megawatts. The system employs AI predictive analytics and dynamic control technologies to optimize energy consumption and distribution, achieving load balancing of 5% to 20%.

As of today, ABB’s smart microgrid management platform has advanced significantly, providing a solution for the efficient utilization of renewable energy sources. By leveraging abundant resources such as wind and solar, the microgrid can effectively minimize carbon emissions.

ABB’s initiative aims to enhance the integration of renewable energy, ensuring that electricity from solar and wind can be reliably supplied to urban areas, especially in regions heavily reliant on fossil fuels.

In the recent past, there has been an increase in the development of green microgrid projects across various industries. Cities are encouraged to adopt these sustainable technologies for efficient energy management and to meet the growing energy demands.

ABB has committed to establishing green microgrid pilot projects in seven industrial zones, with two projects already approved by expert reviewers. These projects aim to combine energy generation, storage, and consumption in a holistic manner, with an annual electricity output potentially reaching 45 million kilowatt-hours.

As renewable energy continues to gain traction, the need for efficient energy management systems will only grow stronger. The transition to green energy not only supports environmental sustainability but also enhances energy security and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
