SM Strengthens Commitment to Solar PVs in Support of Renewable Energy Goals

SM City Bataan has installed 4,060 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, generating a peak capacity of 2,376,000 kW. As the global demand for renewable energy rises, particularly in light of dwindling resources, malls, which are significant consumers of energy, have a pivotal role in driving the transition to a more sustainable future. Recognizing this, SM has been actively enhancing its renewable energy initiatives, aiming to considerably reduce its carbon footprint.

One of the primary strategies involves the deployment of solar PV systems, which convert sunlight into electricity, thereby providing clean, renewable energy. This transition helps SM decrease its dependence on fossil fuels, lower energy costs, and contribute positively to the environment.

Expanding Solar Power Across SM Malls

As of February 2025, SM is nearing full operation of solar PV systems installed across 45 of its properties nationwide, with plans for additional retrofitting in the near future. The implementation of these solar PV systems is part of SM’s broader commitment to sustainability, which has garnered recognition from various reputable institutions both locally and internationally.

Industry Recognition for SM’s Sustainability Efforts

For instance, SM Mall of Asia received accolades at the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards and Sustainable Energy Awards organized by the Department of Energy (DOE). The mall was awarded the Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution due to its solar PV system, which can generate 2.7 megawatts (MW) of peak energy—sufficient to power 1,790 households for an entire year. Similarly, SM City Butuan was honored in the New and Existing Building category at the ASEAN Energy Awards 2024 for its commitment to energy efficiency and conservation innovations.

Supporting the DOE’s Renewable Energy Roadmap

SM is committed to aligning its renewable energy initiatives with the DOE’s Renewable Energy Roadmap 2017-2040, which aims to increase the country’s renewable energy installed capacity to at least 20,000 MW by 2040. SM City Tanza, one of the malls equipped with solar PV panels, features 2,286 units that will produce 1,257.30 kW of peak solar power.

Public-Private Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

SM collaborates with solar PV system providers under the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Distributed Energy Resources program. These partnerships outline project timelines and responsibilities, further solidifying SM’s commitment to renewable energy.

At SM, sustainability is a commitment. Our growing solar portfolio demonstrates our dedication to a greener future for the Philippines, in partnership with the DOE and our valued partners,” stated Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance Group at SM Supermalls. “Together, we’re not just generating cost savings – we’re shaping a more sustainable future by supporting the long-term environmental goals of our partners while contributing to the Philippines’ green transition,” remarked Glenn Tong, Director of Green Heat Corporation, one of SM’s solar PV system providers.

A Model for Sustainable Development

The implementation of solar PV systems by SM not only brings environmental and economic benefits but also serves as a progressive model for public-private partnerships (PPPs). Collaboration with the DOE provides SM with access to technical expertise and financial incentives, helping the country achieve its sustainability objectives. This initiative promotes innovation, generates employment opportunities, and sets a benchmark for other commercial establishments.

DOE’s Support for Sustainable Energy Development

“The DOE has implemented sustainable energy development strategies and institutionalized national and local capabilities, and we are heartened by the strong support we have received from both the private and public sectors,” stated DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara during her speech at the Sustainable Energy Awards.
