Latest Data on Renewable Energy: In April, the installed capacity of new energy generation in the country surged by 215% compared to the previous year.
On May 23, 2025, at 19:43, the National Energy Administration released the statistics for the first four months of the year. By the end of April, the total installed capacity for electricity generation reached 3.49 trillion watts, reflecting an increase of 15.9% year-on-year.
Among the various energy sources, solar power generation capacity reached 990 billion watts, up by 47.7%; wind power generation capacity was 540 billion watts, marking an increase of 18.2%.
According to the calculations provided by the National Energy Administration, the newly installed capacity for renewable energy reached 104.93 gigawatts (GW) during the first four months of the year, representing a growth rate of 74.6%. In April alone, the newly installed renewable energy capacity was 45.22 GW, which is a remarkable 214.7% increase compared to the same period last year.
Since the beginning of this year, the newly installed renewable energy capacity in January and February amounted to 39.47 GW, and in March, it reached 20.24 GW. The data for April shows that the pace of new installations has accelerated significantly, reaching levels comparable to those recorded in the same month of the previous year. This year has seen the highest monthly figures for new renewable energy installations.
The key drivers behind this growth include the implementation of policies aimed at promoting renewable energy development, such as the distributed generation policy introduced by the National Energy Administration.
In January of this year, the National Energy Administration published guidelines for distributed solar power generation projects, which have encouraged industries to adopt these measures. Following this, new projects are now only permitted to utilize self-generated or excess power from distributed energy sources.
On February 9, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration jointly announced a plan to enhance the market for renewable energy pricing. This includes proposed adjustments to pricing for electricity generated from renewable sources to stimulate higher quality development in the sector.
The document is set to be implemented in June 2025, categorizing energy consumption based on differing pricing structures. The new policies aim to address various challenges in the renewable energy sector, such as ensuring sustainable development and managing market expectations.
In April, the prices for various renewable energy products showed significant fluctuations, with solar cell prices recorded at 0.32 yuan/watt and battery prices reaching 0.78 yuan/watt, reflecting year-on-year increases of 14.29% and 14.71% respectively.
However, the supply of renewable energy products has been affected by market demand and pricing pressures. As of the end of April, the market for distributed solar power generation remains robust, with ongoing projects experiencing strong growth.
Overall, the renewable energy sector is poised for continued expansion, driven by favorable policies and growing market demand. The National Energy Administration’s efforts in promoting renewable energy development are expected to yield substantial results in the coming months.
