Schneider Electric and Liminal Partner on EV Battery Ultrasound-Based Inspection
Posted February 28, 2025 by Nicole Willing

France-based digital automation specialist Schneider Electric has teamed up with Liminal Insights to develop innovative battery inspection services. This collaboration aims to create a joint offering that combines Liminal’s ultrasound-based metrology and analytics solutions with Schneider Electric’s automation and industrial intelligence ecosystem, providing real-time inline quality inspection.

The newly integrated inspection system is compatible with all battery cell types and offers manufacturers automated capabilities to identify production deviations and conduct real-time root cause analysis at the cell level. According to Liminal, their EchoStat ultrasound inspection systems can be easily integrated into production lines, require minimal floor space, and consume significantly less power compared to traditional CT and electrical quality testing systems.

Initial tests indicate that a mere 1% reduction in scrap could save manufacturers approximately $10 million annually for a 10 GWh production block. Additionally, by enhancing operational efficiencies, an eight-hour reduction in the cell-finishing process could lead to savings of up to $3 million annually for the same production block. The capacity to inspect multiple cell types with a single solution allows manufacturers to utilize historical insights for future battery products, facilitating adaptation to new cell technologies as production demands change.

“The transition to electric vehicles and clean energy necessitates a greater supply of lower-cost, higher-quality battery cells. Our partnership with Schneider Electric signifies a significant step forward for Liminal in achieving this objective,” stated Andrew Hsieh, co-founder of Liminal Insights. “By integrating EchoStat quality inspection data and analytics with Schneider Electric and AVEVA’s factory intelligence ecosystem, we can provide deeper insights and enhanced digital connectivity. This empowers battery manufacturers to rapidly enhance their quality, productivity, and efficiency.”
