Gurīn Energy has chosen Saft to supply a fully integrated lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for its inaugural project in Japan. This facility, which will be located in Fukushima, aims to provide over 1 GWh of storage capacity. The primary goal of this project is to facilitate the integration of renewable energy into Japan’s power grid, stabilize supply and demand, and prevent energy waste.

The deployment of Battery Energy Storage is essential for Japan to meet its targets of 40-50 percent renewables in its national power generation mix by 2040 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, will deliver a comprehensive lithium-ion battery system that includes more than 1 GWh of storage, along with power conversion and management systems developed in partnership with other companies. Additionally, Saft’s I-Sight cloud supervision and data management systems, which feature AI-based capabilities, will be incorporated into the BESS. Saft will also handle the installation, commissioning, and servicing of the system.

The BESS will be part of Gurīn Energy’s standalone energy storage project in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture. This project is designed to provide over 240 megawatts (MW) of power for four hours, with construction anticipated to commence in 2026. Large-scale energy storage systems are crucial as they store and release electricity as needed, allowing grid operators to more efficiently balance energy demand and generation than traditional methods. By enhancing energy storage capacity, Japan can ensure a reliable and sustainable energy supply while minimizing the curtailment of renewable resources.

This initiative supports Japan’s national renewable energy goals, aiming for a generation mix of 40-50 percent by 2040, an increase from the current 27 percent, and aligns with the nation’s objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Vincent Le Quintrec, Saft’s Sales and Marketing Director for Energy Storage Systems, stated, “Asia is a vital region for the sustained growth of Saft’s Energy Storage Systems business. We are honored that Gurīn Energy has chosen us for this project in Japan, which is crucial for the country’s energy future. Saft’s established track record in lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems, combined with Gurīn Energy’s commitment to renewable project development, will significantly contribute to Japan’s energy transition.”

Ushio Okuyama, Country Manager for Gurīn Energy in Japan, remarked, “At Gurīn Energy, we are dedicated to accelerating the energy transition in Asia by developing projects that strategically enhance the renewable energy landscape in the region. Our project in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, is groundbreaking and will greatly increase the flexibility of local, regional, and national power grids. We are excited to partner with Saft, a global leader in battery solutions, and are more confident than ever in our ability to develop a project that will benefit all of Japan.”
