Renewable Energy to Dominate 2025 US Electricity Capacity with 93% from Solar, Batteries, and Wind

Renewable

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that in 2025, there will be significant deployments in the energy sector, comprising 32.5 GW of solar power, 18.2 GW of energy storage, and 7.7 GW of wind energy. Collectively, these contributions will account for nearly 93% of the total new electricity capacity, anticipated to reach a record 63 GW.

According to the EIA’s latest report, the “Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory” (EIA-860M), the total capacity additions for 2025 are expected to be the highest annual deployment since 2002, surpassing the 48.6 GW of utility-scale capacity added in 2024. In that year, the nation saw its highest total since approximately 60 GW of new capacity was connected to the grid.

Solar energy is projected to represent 51.5% of all new capacity in 2025. Texas is expected to lead this surge with 11.6 GW of new solar installations, accounting for nearly 36% of all new additions. Following Texas, California is set to deploy 2.9 GW, while five other states—Indiana, Arizona, Michigan, Florida, and New York—are each projected to install over 1 GW of capacity.

In terms of battery storage, a substantial growth is anticipated, with 18.2 GW of new capacity expected. Although the report does not specify the duration of storage systems, it is known that California and Texas, the two largest battery markets, typically feature systems with storage capacities of four hours and two and a half hours, respectively.
