How National Standards Regulate the Reuse of Power Batteries

On October 18, 2025, at 06:03, the financial news reported that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is actively discussing how to promote the reuse of power batteries used in new energy vehicles. With the rapid increase in the production of new energy vehicles, the issue of battery recycling has become a key focus for industry development.

Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published the Draft Technical Standards for the Evaluation of Reuse of Power Batteries, which consists of five national standards aimed at regulating and promoting the reuse of power batteries.

The standards will set forth criteria for the reuse of batteries from electric vehicles, including requirements for battery performance assessment, management, capacity recovery, and more. This will help ensure high-quality development in the battery recycling industry.

The current market model indicates that by 2024, the national power battery recycling capacity is expected to break 30 million units, corresponding to a market size of approximately 480 billion yuan. It is projected that by 2030, the market size will reach 600 billion yuan, significantly driving the momentum for battery recycling.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has already released 22 national standards regarding power battery recycling, which cover various aspects such as management regulations, testing requirements, and recycling methods. There is a strong emphasis on ensuring quality and compliance in the recycling processes to enhance the sustainability of the industry.

“We can see that power batteries are becoming increasingly crucial, with diverse applications and numerous challenges associated with their recycling,” said an industry expert. The established standards aim to facilitate the growth of the battery recycling sector, ensuring its compliance with the highest quality benchmarks.

Furthermore, the Ministry is committed to enhancing the technical standards and guidelines for battery recycling. This includes focusing on the integration of electric vehicle technology, battery production, and recycling processes to support the sustainable development of the industry.

On the regulatory side, the Ministry will continue to push for the development of standards and regulations that ensure the safe, environmentally friendly, and efficient recycling of power batteries. The ultimate goal is to create a robust framework that supports the ongoing growth of the new energy vehicle sector.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is expected to collaborate closely with industry stakeholders to refine these standards further, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the market while promoting a greener future.
