Take Charge of Battery Safety
FSRI urges all members of the fire service to “Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety” in the station, at home, and in the community. This initiative covers everything from purchasing products to their disposal when they are no longer needed or safe to use. Each letter in “C.H.A.R.G.E.” represents an important safety measure that is easy to remember:
C – **Choose certified products**
When buying lithium-ion battery-powered devices, select products that are listed or safety-certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. This ensures that the devices meet essential safety requirements.
H – **Handle with care**
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use only the charging equipment that comes with the product, and store batteries away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, exits, and flammable materials. For larger devices like eBikes, charge them outside your home and away from exit paths whenever possible. Avoid charging larger devices overnight.
A – **Always stay alert for warning signs**
Regularly check battery-powered devices for signs of damage or wear, such as swelling or punctures. Listen for unusual sounds like hissing or popping, and watch for excessive heat or strange odors. If you notice any of these warning signs, stop using the device immediately. White or gray wispy smoke indicates an immediate fire risk.
R – **Recycle battery-powered devices properly**
Dispose of old or damaged batteries responsibly by taking them to a battery recycling center. Never throw batteries, chargers, or battery-powered devices into regular trash bins.
G – **Get out quickly if there’s a fire**
Be aware of the warning signs and evacuate immediately if you detect them. Follow your home fire escape plan and call 9-1-1 once you are safe.
E – **Educate others about battery safety**
Share your knowledge about lithium-ion battery safety with friends and family to help protect them.
