Porsche is exploring electric vehicle battery recycling technology to power its new cars. Recycling high-voltage batteries from electric vehicles is a complex process, but Porsche is determined to give it a try. The company announced last week that it has initiated a pilot project aimed at developing a scalable recycling process that extracts raw materials from old electric vehicle batteries to manufacture new batteries for its electric models.
Porsche is keen on recycling electric vehicle batteries to power its new electric cars. Barbara Frenkel, a member of the Porsche Board, explained, “With innovative recycling processes, we strive to enhance our independence from the volatile and geopolitically unstable raw material markets.” The Porsche factory is currently working on the first phase of the high-voltage battery recycling process, where used electric vehicle (EV) batteries are crushed by powerful machines and processed into a mixture of particles known as “black mass.” This mixture contains valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese.
The next step involves separating the black mass into individual raw materials necessary for producing new batteries. Finally, materials that meet the required quality and purity standards will be used in specified proportions to manufacture batteries for new Porsche electric vehicles. The German automaker has stated that, to date, it has produced 65 tons of black mass. If this issue can be effectively addressed, this effort will support its circular economy strategy. It will also assist the company in complying with EU regulations, which require automotive manufacturers to recover battery materials through recycling programs; specifically, an 80% recycling target for lithium by 2031.
Porsche hopes to tackle this challenge and set an example for other brands. Reports indicate that while 95% of the materials in lithium-ion batteries can be recycled, only 5% of electric vehicle batteries are currently being recycled. This represents a significant opportunity, with the potential to reduce the demand for the mining of these precious metals.
