Nornico Unveils Innovative Catalyst for Alkaline Electrolysis in China

Nornico

Norilsk Nickel showcased its innovative catalyst for alkaline electrolysis in China, which is crucial for the global transition to a low-carbon economy. The hydrogen produced through this process is currently one of the most cost-effective and scalable solutions available. China places great importance on innovation-driven development and ecological civilization, incorporating green development as a significant part of its national strategy. This commitment aims to promote sustainable and high-quality economic and social development, creating a favorable policy environment and market opportunities for environmental innovations, including hydrogen energy technology.

The palladium alloy-based catalyst developed by Norilsk Nickel demonstrates high activity and stability, paving the way for the rapid commercialization of these solutions. Anna Stavitskaya, the project leader at the Norilsk Nickel Palladium Technology Center, presented this innovative research and development achievement at the International Hydrogen Energy Conference held in Beijing. The new catalyst for alkaline water electrolysis is expected to reduce energy consumption and enhance the efficiency of green hydrogen production.

“China is the largest consumer of hydrogen and also a major producer of alkaline electrolysis components and equipment. By introducing carbon-supported bimetallic palladium catalysts into the cathodes of alkaline electrolysis cells, the levelized cost of hydrogen can be reduced by 5-6%, significantly improving its production efficiency. These research achievements hold strategic significance for both the Chinese market and the global hydrogen industry,” commented Anna Stavitskaya.

Norilsk Nickel continues its research, focusing on new applications of palladium in hydrogen energy technology, aiming to reduce costs and enhance efficiency. The company holds a leading position in the metal market and makes a significant contribution to the global decarbonization process. The Russian Palladium Technology Center has developed innovative palladium-based catalytic systems for alkaline electrolysis, which have proven effective in laboratory tests. The next step involves collaborating with Chinese partners to apply these technologies in industrial production.
