Nissan’s 2028 EV Battery Could Make Tesla Sweat
===============================================

Set to debut in 2028, Nissan’s solid-state battery technology promises significant advancements in energy density, range, and charging capabilities for electric and hybrid vehicles.

A high-ranking official at Nissan has confirmed the company’s plans to launch these solid-state batteries in 2028. This technology aims to enhance energy density, enable faster charging, and extend the range of vehicles. In addition to electric vehicles (EVs), solid-state batteries could also be incorporated into future plug-in hybrid models. Despite facing some financial challenges, Nissan remains committed to solid-state battery development. The first production EV utilizing this next-generation technology is expected in 2028, offering substantial improvements in range, charging speed, cost, and packaging—developments that will certainly catch the attention of all EV manufacturers, including Tesla.

The Japanese automaker has invested years into solid-state battery technology and is now reaffirming its commitment. Christophe Amblard, Nissan’s Director of Product Planning in Europe, stated in an interview with Auto Express, “Yes, we will be ready for solid-state batteries in 2028.” However, he emphasized that the company will not rush this new technology to market. Amblard noted, “We can’t rush the process. We have to be sure that this technology is reliable and ready to meet our customers’ expectations.” This indicates that Nissan prefers to take the necessary time to ensure the technology is perfected rather than risk launching a subpar product.

### The Advantages of Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries are projected to enhance energy density by up to 30% compared to current lithium-ion batteries, while also being more cost-effective to produce and compatible with ultra-fast charging. The key to this technology lies in the elimination of liquid elements from the battery cells, which improves temperature management and allows for more efficient packaging.

Nissan’s solid-state batteries may also be featured in the next-generation GT-R, which is rumored to be released later in the decade. The company teased the Hyper Force Concept in 2023, showcasing a fully electric powertrain capable of generating an astonishing 1,341 horsepower. Recent reports suggest that this vehicle may ultimately be a hybrid instead. Regardless, Nissan’s electrification efforts appear to be progressing rapidly.

Amblard also indicated that solid-state batteries may be utilized in plug-in hybrid vehicles. He mentioned, “We are not sure where the technology could lead, but we are actively exploring all potential applications.” This reveals that while Nissan is uncertain about the future, the company is thoroughly investigating all possibilities.

### Competition in the Market

Nissan’s ambition to bring solid-state batteries to market aligns with the objectives of competing automakers such as Toyota, Stellantis, VW Group, BYD, and SAIC. Additionally, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, CATL, is planning to initiate small-scale production of solid-state batteries by 2027. It’s important to note that the move toward solid-state technology is not limited to traditional car manufacturers; tech giants like Xiaomi and Huawei have also recently filed patents suggesting their own ventures into this innovative technology.
