Nipomo’s New Battery Storage Facility Begins Operations Amid Safety Concerns

Nipomos

The Caballero Battery Energy Storage Site in Nipomo is now fully operational. Recently, officials conducted a tour of the facility to showcase the advanced technology and address community safety concerns.

“This asset complies with all of the latest NFPA codes, and we believe it represents state-of-the-art energy storage,” stated Guillaume Dufay, Chief Technology Officer of Alpha Omega Power.

On Wednesday night, Alpha Omega Power hosted an open house where local residents voiced their apprehensions regarding safety, especially in light of the recent fire incident at the Moss Landing battery storage facility. However, site officials reassured the community that the design of their facility significantly mitigates these risks.

Nick Warner, co-founder of the Energy Safety Response Group, explained, “In Moss Landing, there was one massive building over 800 feet long, all under one roof, with limited separation between thousands of battery systems. In contrast, our facility consists of small containers, each roughly the size of a walk-in freezer. Each system here is only a fraction of 1% of the total battery capacity of Moss Landing, not including the additional fire load from the rest of the building.” He further emphasized that thorough testing has confirmed that any potential fire outbreak in one of the storage units would remain contained.

Firefighters have also been actively training to respond to potential emergencies at the Nipomo battery storage facility.

Dufay expressed confidence that this facility will significantly benefit California, particularly the Central Coast, as the state aims to transition to clean energy sources. “Currently, 60 to 70 percent of California’s power is generated from solar or wind. However, power is challenging to transport and store, and this facility addresses that issue. It provides the necessary energy during the evening hours when solar power diminishes, yet demand remains high,” he said.

Those who attended the tour shared their thoughts on the project. “While I can’t claim that this facility is entirely risk-free, the information I’ve gained certainly boosts my confidence in its advanced safety features. It adheres to current codes and was designed to be much safer than the Moss Landing facility,” remarked Jimmy Paulding, San Luis Obispo County District 4 Supervisor.
