Financial Observation | Major News! “Ning Wang” Intensifies Presence in Qingdao by Establishing a New Energy Technology Company
As a leader in the power battery sector, CATL’s every move garners significant attention. Recently, CATL New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has officially launched another important project in Qingdao. According to Ai Qicha, Shidai Qiji New Energy Technology (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. has completed its business registration in Qingdao, with a registered capital of up to 20 million yuan. This marks a significant advancement in CATL’s strategic development in the northern market.
Shidai Qiji New Energy Technology (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. is entirely owned by CATL’s subsidiary, Shidai Qiji Green Energy Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., with Li Junliang as the legal representative. The company is located at 288 Ningxia Road, Jinmen Street, Shinan District, Qingdao, Shandong Province. It operates in a broad range of sectors, including the research and development of emerging energy technologies, sales of new energy vehicle battery exchange facilities, online energy measurement technology research, energy management contracts, battery sales, vehicle charging sales, rental of charging control equipment, sales of charging piles, sales of complete new energy vehicles, sales of new energy vehicle electrical accessories, sales of battery parts, operation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, sales of electric bicycles, and sales of intelligent power distribution and control equipment.
It is noteworthy that in the past month, CATL has registered several new subsidiaries in Shandong. In April 2023, CATL established Qingdao Runchao New Energy Co., Ltd. in Qingdao. Despite different focuses in their registered capitals and business scopes, all three companies share “battery exchange” as a common keyword. Additionally, CATL has set up new companies in Jinan and Weifang. According to Tianyancha information, on March 27 this year, CATL established a new company in Jinan to further expand its business in the new energy sector; on April 11, CATL founded a new energy technology company in Weifang. Since 2022, CATL has viewed Shandong as a vital strategic region.
In recent years, CATL’s collaboration with Shandong has strengthened significantly. In July 2022, the Shandong provincial government and the Jining municipal government reached strategic cooperation agreements and signed investment agreements with CATL. In December, projects such as the Shandong Times New Energy Battery Industry Base and the CATL 1.1GW national-level large-scale photovoltaic power generation base project were initiated simultaneously. In September 2023, Shandong High-Speed Group and Shandong Port Group also formed partnerships with CATL. In January 2024, the Dongying municipal government signed a strategic cooperation agreement with CATL, focusing on collaborations in energy storage lithium battery PACK assembly and system integration manufacturing, vehicle electrification, and zero-carbon industrial park construction. In September 2024, Shandong Heavy Industry Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement with CATL. According to CATL’s 2024 annual report, the first phase of the Shandong Times New Energy Battery Project, invested by CATL, is expected to commence production in April this year, and the second phase has already begun construction. Thus, CATL’s cooperative footprint in Shandong has expanded from Jining to Qingdao, Dongying, Yantai, Jinan, and Weifang.
Acceleration of Qingdao’s New Energy Industry
CATL’s aggressive investments are closely tied to the explosive growth of Qingdao’s new energy industry. Data from 2024 indicates that Qingdao’s production of new energy vehicles reached 123,200 units, a staggering increase of 134% year-on-year; the total output value soared to 16.332 billion yuan, with a growth rate of 268%. Notably, Qingdao has excelled in the manufacturing of new energy commercial and special vehicles. For instance, FAW Liberation produced a total of 140,000 vehicles throughout the year at its Qingdao facility, with new energy vehicles accounting for 12,000 units, including medium and heavy trucks as well as light trucks. Additionally, at the beginning of 2025, FAW Liberation’s micro-commercial vehicle project commenced construction, projected to enable the concurrent production of both fuel and new energy vehicles, with a planned annual output of 100,000 micro trucks. Furthermore, CRRC and New China International have also launched new projects in Qingdao.
On the policy front, in January 2025, the latest Qingdao Intelligent Connected New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Action Plan (2025–2027) was released, aiming to build a significant national hub for innovative applications of intelligent connected new energy vehicles, a production base for new energy commercial vehicles, and an export-oriented industry for new energy vehicles. By 2027, the industry chain scale aims to reach 300 billion yuan, with total vehicle production exceeding 1.3 million units and new energy vehicles accounting for over 40% of production, alongside a compound annual growth rate of over 200% for new energy commercial vehicles. The plan also targets the cultivation of three new energy vehicle manufacturers with annual production exceeding 100,000 units. In this action plan, Qingdao is particularly focusing on new energy commercial vehicles, intending to develop a complete product matrix ranging from micro trucks to heavy-duty trucks, focusing on pure electric, hybrid, and fuel cell technologies.
Moreover, as an essential northern port city and logistics hub, with an average daily truck traffic volume exceeding 200,000 vehicles, there is an urgent demand to strengthen the construction of intelligent charging and battery swapping infrastructure. This undoubtedly provides CATL with vast market opportunities and aligns closely with its vision of “making green energy accessible.”
