NGK and Torex Develop Next-Gen Charging Module

NGK Insulators and Torex Semiconductor have collaborated to create a next-generation charging module that incorporates EnerCera technology along with advanced solar cells, including organic thin-film and perovskite solar cells. Traditional solar-powered systems typically operate by using solar-generated electricity directly to power the system. However, these systems often struggle under weak lighting conditions, such as indoors, where the electricity generated is minimal, limiting their practical applications.

The newly developed module integrates solar cells, NGK’s EnerCera batteries, and an ultra-low-power power management integrated circuit (IC) from Torex. This combination enables efficient energy harvesting, even from weak light sources producing around 100µW. The energy harvested is stored in the EnerCera battery, which then provides sufficient power to drive the system, thereby significantly broadening potential applications.

Moreover, the integration of flexible film-type solar cells, EnerCera batteries, and power management ICs allows for the creation of lightweight, ultra-thin, and bendable modules that leverage the unique advantages of each component. As a result, this module is anticipated to find use in various applications such as wearable devices, IoT edge devices, and indoor environmental monitoring systems for both offices and factories. A demonstration unit will be showcased at Sensor Converge 2025 in the United States and at NGK in Nagoya, Japan.
