Nextracker has been selected for a significant solar power project in Europe, marking a key milestone in the company’s regional expansion. The advanced NX Horizon™ solar trackers from Nextracker will be utilized in one of Europe’s largest solar installations—the 550 MW Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida solar PV park located in Western Macedonia, Greece. This project is owned by PPC Renewables (PPCR), a subsidiary of the PPC Group, and developed by EPC company Terna SA.
Constructed on the reclaimed land of a former coal mine, this solar park aims to generate clean and affordable energy and is currently nearing the completion of its construction phase. Upon becoming fully operational, the Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida project is set to become the largest standalone solar plant in Greece, expected to meet approximately 1.8% of the country’s total annual electricity demand.
This initiative reflects a broader transition in Europe towards clean energy and aligns with Greece’s updated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which now targets 82% renewable energy in electricity generation by 2030, an increase from the previous goal of 66% established in 2019.
Large-scale renewable energy projects like this are crucial for assisting the European Union in achieving its long-term objectives of energy independence and net-zero emissions by 2050. In addition to environmental benefits, the solar park is anticipated to foster regional economic development by creating jobs and revitalizing areas that were previously reliant on fossil fuel industries.
Howard Wenger, president of Nextracker, commented, “The 550 MW Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida solar project is a significant step toward enhancing energy independence in Europe and mitigating capacity shortages in the region. We are proud to collaborate with leaders like Terna SA and Greece’s utility PPC, who are adhering to the highest European standards in executing large-scale utility solar projects. This landmark project underscores our commitment to providing world-class technology and service, supported by our skilled European team and a robust supply chain ecosystem.”
Nextracker has shipped over 130 GW of solar trackers globally and has established itself as a market leader in Europe, as noted in a recent Wood Mackenzie report. To bolster its growing presence, the company has expanded its European operations and fortified its network of local manufacturing partners. This strategic move enables Nextracker to efficiently address the logistical and scheduling requirements of large-scale utility and distributed-generation (DG) projects, ensuring timely equipment delivery across the continent.
