The domestically produced 105-megawatt compressed air energy storage synchronous generator has successfully passed its evaluation.

“We have successfully rolled out the tenth unit of the 105-megawatt, 2-pole synchronous generator, which indicates that the domestically produced hundred-megawatt dual-operation motor is mature and reliable. This will become the core of the next-generation air energy storage power station,” said Wan Chuangqi, Chairman of Wolong Electric, with excitement on May 5 at the facilities of Nanyang Explosion-Proof Group.

Recently, the tenth unit of the 105-megawatt compressed air energy storage synchronous generator, manufactured by Wolong Electric, was officially unveiled and received certification from an expert evaluation team from the China Machinery Industry Federation. This accomplishment signifies a breakthrough in the domestically manufactured technology for hundred-megawatt motors, filling a gap in the full-package manufacturing of high-power electric and power generation dual-operation motors.

This product was co-developed by Wolong Electric and China Storage Energy (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd.. The partnership represents a strong collaboration from research and development to manufacturing and application.

“This generator boasts the largest single-unit capacity globally, providing crucial equipment support for the high-quality development of the long-duration large-scale compressed air energy storage industry,” stated Chen Haisheng, Director of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He added that compressed air energy storage power stations are not constrained by terrain, and the new product can save over 40% of land area and nearly 2 million yuan in annual electricity costs per unit. It can not only replace pumped storage power stations but also reduce the construction period from 7 years to just 18 months. Currently, some applications of the new product have already been implemented in relevant projects.

“The new product is like a ‘super strong heart’. It possesses independent intellectual property rights, and its overall technology has reached an internationally advanced level, with indicators such as motor capacity and efficiency being globally leading,” commented Song Xiaogang, Secretary-General of the China Machinery Industry Federation. He further noted that compressed air energy storage technology represents a new avenue in the clean energy sector and acts as a “ballast” for grid systems. The new storage projects and related products will serve as a significant tool for China to reshape the global energy landscape.
