As more individuals look for ways to harness renewable energy, ongoing technological advancements are making the transition more financially viable. A recent study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, indicates that new solar technology could significantly reduce costs for homeowners in the near future.
The study highlights that perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells can be produced in the United States at a minimum sustainable price of $0.35 per watt. This cost is expected to decrease further as materials become more accessible. The findings also suggest that the price of silicon cells will likely continue to decline, and perovskite-related equipment will be more readily available.
Currently, photovoltaic solar panels are considered the industry standard, with production costs around $0.15 per watt, thanks to falling prices. However, these panels typically operate at an efficiency of only 15-22%, a figure that perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells could surpass easily.
In an interview with pv magazine, Jacob J. Cordell, the study’s lead author, expressed optimism about the future of perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. “Our work is based on data we collected from equipment manufacturers and material providers over the past year,” Cordell stated. “We expect the modules to have an efficiency ranging from 25% to 35%.”
With the current generation of solar panels, homeowners can save up to $30,000 over twenty years after installation. As the efficiency of solar panels continues to improve, consumers can anticipate even greater returns on their investments. Transitioning to solar energy not only leads to savings on electricity bills but also contributes to reducing harmful air pollution. Additionally, homeowners may experience an unexpected boost in property value.
For the time being, Cordell believes that perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells will primarily be developed for large-scale projects due to their enhanced efficiency. However, this could evolve as the market for this technology matures.
