New National Standards for Electric Vehicle Power Batteries Announced — Economic Times — People’s Network
The new national standard for electric vehicle power batteries, titled “Safety Requirements for Electric Vehicle Power Batteries” (GB38031—2025), will take effect starting July 1, 2026. This standard, which is currently in the process of being publicly released, focuses on improving the technology requirements for battery testing. It includes modifications from previous standards, such as changing the term “flame exposure” to “non-flame exposure” and ensuring that gases emitted do not cause harm to individuals.
Additionally, this new standard will mandate that batteries undergo specific testing procedures for thermal stability, electrical state, and inspection intervals. There will also be requirements for external short-circuit tests, which must not result in flame or explosion.
According to the People's Daily (April 17, 2025 edition), the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has stated that the conditions of electric vehicle batteries must meet these new standards to enhance safety and performance.
As part of the ongoing development in this sector, on April 16, 2025, MIIT reported that China’s electric vehicle industry is experiencing a rapid growth rate, with sales reaching a peak of 245%. The Ministry aims to ensure higher safety and quality standards through the implementation of these new regulations.
Furthermore, as China continues to expand its electric vehicle market, it is crucial for manufacturers to comply with these standards to maintain competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
The upcoming regulations are seen as a significant step towards ensuring that electric vehicles are safe and efficient, thus supporting the country’s transition towards greener energy solutions.
